FAQs About Camping

Camping is a favorite American pastime. Whether you spend your nights in the wild sleeping in a tent, in the comfort of an RV or under the stars, you probably have a few questions before you head out for the first time. Use these FAQs about camping as your guide.

What is the best way to start a campfire?

First of all, you need to use dry wood. Starting a fire with moist wood is just frustrating. Take plenty of small twigs, known as kindling, and stand them up in a teepee shape around a loose wad of newspaper. Set the newspaper on fire and keep feeding in more newspaper until these twigs start burning. Then, stack some thicker branches on top of the twigs. As the fire continues to burn and get hotter, stack on your bigger logs, still keeping the tepee shape. This may take some practice, but it is simple once you get the hang of it.

Is the water at the campground safe to drink?

This depends on the park. There is often a sign on the spigot, but if you have any doubts, then boil the water for ten minutes before drinking it.

How can I make my tent more comfortable?

Some people like to rough it and camp with as little gear as possible, while others like to make their tent space more homey. Start by using an air mattress for padding. You can also put a lantern in the tent for light and find a battery powered fan to keep you cool.

Camping is a great way to have an adventure. Remember to play it safe and have a fun time with nature.
