Camping in a Tepee

When you were young you may have heard about tepees, the cone-shaped homes that Native Americans lived in years ago. Today, camping in a tepee is still more common than you might think. In fact, it can present a great adventure for those willing to try something new and different.

About the tepee

Tepees are made of canvas. Most are about eight feet tall at the tip and naturally, the height decreases towards the edges. Some tepees are quite large and can fit entire families inside. There are several types of tepees to choose from. The smallest type is usually intended as a children's toy and is not meant for real camping. Look instead for a sturdy canvas tepee. The Dexon Great Plains tepee is an excellent choice because it is water and fireproof, three people can sleep inside of it and it is easy to assemble. If you prefer a modern style, then choose a fiberglass tepee which is far more modern and sometimes comes with a removable floor. Hardcore campers may view camping in one of these as cheating, so prepare to face some sour looks if you show up at a campground with one.

What to bring

If you can figure out how to set up the tepee based on the included directions, then camping in it is just as easy as camping in another kind of tent. Bring all of the ordinary camping supplies, including sleeping bags, firewood, a cook pot, plates, sunscreen, bug repellent and whatever else you might need.

Camping in a tepee is a great experience. Prepare for a few stares as you set up, but realize that most people are just jealous of your unique tent.
